Riverside Drive is the site for the arts & crafts show and sale, as well as for many of our non-profit food vendors.  As always, hand crafted items and specialty items will be for sale.  In addition to the arts & crafts show, the 2009 Festival of Roses will feature three stages with entertainment.  Special entertainment and activities are on tap for children of all ages.  The Kid’s Area will be located in front of the Orangeburg County Fine Arts Center.  The area will feature inflatable activities as well as food vendors catering to the child in all of us.  There will be a petting zoo and animal rides too.  Activities begin on Thursday evening with Showcase Orangeburg and continue through Sunday afternoon.

 

Senior's Day
Seniors’ Day at the Orangeburg Festival of Roses will be Friday, April 30th.  Special activities have been arranged from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Garden Stage in the Azalea Garden.  Seniors will enjoy refreshments, sponsored by Longwood Plantation, play bingo and end the day with music by Cornell Berry.  Senior’s Day Activities are free to all Seniors 50 and over.  Contact Kayla Stroman at kstroman@orangeburg.sc.us or 803.533.6020 for more information.

Rose Festival Road Race
The 2009 Rose Festival Road Race will be held on Saturday, May 2nd and will be a Southern Regional Championship Race. This year's activities include a 12K Run, 5K Run/Walk and a 1 Mile Fun Run. Blackwater River Race
The Blackwater River Race is one of the most unique competitions held during the weekend.  One and two-man canoes and kayaks compete in several categories.  The race will begin at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 2nd at the Baughman’s Landing located on Shillings Bridge Road.  It will end at the City of Orangeburg Boat Dock.  The race will take approximately two hours for all participants to finish, after which the awards will be presented.  The Orangeburg Kiwanis Club and Zeus Industrial Products, Inc. sponsor the event.  Join the fun as these boaters test their skills on the Edisto, the longest blackwater river in the world.

Budweiser Basscatcher Tourament
The 24th Annual Festival of Roses Budweiser Basscatcher Tournament will be held Saturday, May 2nd, from 6 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.  This is a one-day Largemouth Bass Tournament on any lake, pond or river.  Entry fee is $20/team, $10 Big Bass (optional).  Weigh In will be held at the Edisto River Landing off Glover Street.  Call the Orangeburg County Chamber of Commerce for more information at 803-534-6821.

Orangeburg Princess of Roses Pageant

The City of Orangeburg Parks & Recreation Department is accepting applications for the 2010 Orangeburg Princess of Roses Pageant.  The Pageant will be held Saturday, April 17 at 2:00p.m. at Robert Stevenson Auditorium; 979 Middleton Street.

Young ladies from throughout the state are invited to take part in this annual event.  Age divisions are:  Orangeburg Princess of Roses -- 15-16 years old; Teen Orangeburg Princess of Roses -- 13-14 years old; Young Orangeburg Princess of Roses -- 10-12 years old; Little Orangeburg Princess of Roses -- 7-9 years old; Wee Orangeburg Princess of Roses -- 4-6 years old.
In the Pageant, there will be a winner, first, and second runner-up in each age division.  There will also be a Photogenic Competition for contestants who wish to enter one or more photographs.  A winner and runner-up will be chosen in each of the Princess Photogenic age divisions.

Applications are available at the City of Orangeburg Parks and Recreation Department and the Orangeburg County Chamber of Commerce.  Entry fee is $30 for the Pageant, $10 for the first photograph in the Photogenic Competition, and $5 for additional photographs in the Photogenic Competition.  Deadline for entry is Friday, April 9, 2010.  To receive an application contact Jacquelyn Fogle, Pageant Coordinator, at jfogle@orangeburg.sc.us or (803) 533-6020.

Orangeburg Queen of Roses Pageant

The Orangeburg Queen of Roses Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce that applications are now available for the 2010 Orangeburg Queen of Roses Scholarship Pageant.  The Pageant will be held on Saturday, April 17th at 7:00pm in Stevenson Auditorium in Orangeburg.

The Executive Committee is looking for young women that meet the eligibility requirements of being 17-23 years old, has never been married or pregnant, is a full-time college or university student as of the 2011 fall semester who is either a resident of South Carolina or is attending a South Carolina college or university.

Contestants will compete in Sportswear, Talent, and Evening Gown/On Stage Question.  Judging will be on a 1-10 scale with the highest overall score being crowned Orangeburg Queen of Roses.  Awards for Orangeburg Queen of Roses include a $1,500 scholarship, crown, trophy and sash.  First and Second Runners-Up will receive $750 and $500 respectively, and a trophy.  The Talent Competition Winner will receive a $500 scholarship and trophy.

Airplane Rides and Exhibit 

EAA Chapter 1367, the new Hawthrone Aviators, will be offering scenic air tours of Orangeburg during the 2009 Orangeburg Festival of Roses.  The rides will be available Saturday and Sunday.  Tickets may be obtained at the gardens from Chapter representatives near the City of Orangeburg Tent or at the airport.

 

 

Sports Tournaments

The City of Orangeburg Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to offer several tournaments as part of the Orangeburg Festival of Roses.  This year tournaments will be offered in softball and golf.  Call 803-534-6821 for more information or download an application at this site.

 

Golf Tournament

The 38th Annual Orangeburg Festival of Roses Golf Tournament will be played at the Hillcrest Golf Course on Saturday and Sunday, April 25 & 26 with a practice round scheduled for Friday, April 24. Flights consist of first, second, third, seniors (55 and over) and ladies.  The seniors and ladies flights will be awarded a low gross and low net winners.  Players 55 and over will be given the choice of playing in the seniors flight or in the regular flight.  Players return each year to participate in this event where a generous mixture of rivalry and camaraderie provide pleasure and excitement.  Entry Fee is $90.00 per person.  Shotgun start on Saturday is a 9:00 a.m.  Call the Orangeburg County Chamber of Commerce at 803-534-6821 for further information

Softball Tournament
Play will begin Friday, May 1st, at Hillcrest, Hedgespeth and Adden Street Ballfields and continue throughout the weekend.  Tournament style will be ASA slow pitch double elimination for both men and women teams.  Deadline for registration is Wednesday, April 29th by 5:00 p.m. and the entry fee is $125.00 (Softballs will be provided).  First, second and third place teams will receive a trophy, and first and second place teams will receive a T-shirt.  You can contact Tournament Director Ike Haigler at 803-533-6020.
